Unfolding Theatre denounces racism in all its forms. These pledges are part of our ambition to be actively anti-racist and to ensure the company is relevant to and valued by artists and audiences who experience racism in the North East.
Our 2023-24 pledges build on learning through our monitoring of who we reach (staff, freelancers, participants & audiences) and our 2021-22 anti-racism pledges: to undertake unconscious bias training, to be an active member of Culture Against Racism and to appoint a Creative Associate from a community who experiences racism. This work has informed new pledges for 2023-24:
- To ensure all Creative Associates and staff feel confident, well-trained and knowledgeable to enact our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion policy and practice. As Unfolding Theatre grows, this work aims to ensure it is actively anti-racist across all activities at home and on tour.
- To invest in increasing global majority audiences to reflect the diversity of Newcastle.
- Our 2019-22 audience data = 1% Black, 2% Asian, 6% Mixed Heritage, 1% Other
- Newcastle = 2% Black, 10% Asian, 2% Mixed Heritage, 1 % Other and rapidly becoming more diverse: 28% of children aged 5 are Black, Asian & Mixed Heritage.
- To maintain and build on progress made increasing the diversity of UT’s core team and freelancers to support talent development for Black, Asian, Mixed Heritage and global majority theatre practitioners in the North East.
These pledges will be reviewed on an annual basis in line with the review of our wider EDI Policy.
